Police bugged suspect officer
Saturday 29th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.
A SPECIAL branch officer with 25 years on the force who was arrested under anti-terrorism laws and had his home, car and even his golf bag bugged by States police colleagues has been forced to resign.
Officers are believed to have placed the bugs after Nigel Gregory was deliberately sent out of the Island on a ‘bogus’ visit to Northern Ireland.
Mr Gregory, who was a detective-constable, was the focus of the hi-tech surveillance operation lasting several months following allegations that he misused information gathered from people entering the Island.
As a special branch officer he was responsible for keeping watch for terrorists and other serious criminals at the Airport and the Harbour.
Secret CCTV footage caught him taking a woman into the Special Branch offices, which should be strictly off-limits.
It was after these images were recorded that Mr Gregory, who had 25 years of experience, including time in the drugs squad and as a police motorcyclist in the force, was arrested under the anti-terrorism law and suspended in July last year.
Mr Gregory, who was 43 years old when he was arrested, appeared at a disciplinary hearing before police chief Graham Power last week and was ‘required to resign’.
No decision has yet been made on whether he will face criminal charges.
