Muratti men in frame for Player of the Year
Wednesday 31st May 2006, 12:00AM BST.
THREE Muratti players are in line for this season’s Coca-Cola Jersey Football Combination Player of the Year award.
Midfield maestro Dominic Maher of St Peter is up against Jersey Scottish duo Scott Devlin and goal machine Ross Crick.
Maher helped St Peter to the Division I title this season while Devlin and Crick starred as Scottish narrowly failed to win their third consecutive championship.
Devlin played a pivotal role in defence, helping Scottish to the play-off decider against St Peter, but missed the match and the Muratti after breaking a bone in his back in Scottish’s final league match of the season.
Crick was Jersey’s leading marksman for the second time in three seasons after claiming 54 goals – 51 in Scottish colours.
The players in contention for the Division II award are all strikers – Matt Scriven (St Clement), Phil Helleur (Sporting Academics) and Scott Quarrell (St Ouen).
The trio have scored 24, 11 and 31 goals respectively this season.
Nominees for the Referee of the Year are all Class V officials.
They are Andy Norman and previous winners Ian Solomon and Mark Le Cornu.
Jersey captain Nina Woods (St John) is in for the ladies’ award alongside Kathryn Porter (Jersey Wanderers) and Krystle Matthews (St Clement).
The format for this year’s presentations is once again different in a bid to cut down the cost so that more sponsorship cash goes back into the game.
A buffet lunch and presentation at the Pomme d’Or Hotel on Saturday 10 June will be followed by England’s World Cup opener against Paraguay shown on a big screen.
Combination president Tim Darwin said: ‘Our sponsors, Coca-Cola and LR Trading, were instrumental in us trying out a new format this year, primarily to ensure that more of the sponsorship money available to the Combination finds its way back into grassroots football.
We are delighted to unveil this new and exciting look to our presentation event.’
