Quake: Island asked to help
Wednesday 31st May 2006, 12:00AM BST.
ISLANDERS are being asked to help the people of Indonesia after the devastating earthquake at the weekend.
The earthquake, which struck the island of Java early on Saturday morning, has resulted in the deaths of 5,000 people and left thousands of others injured and homeless.
Money is being raised in Jersey to buy shelter boxes and aquaboxes which are being sent to the devastated area by Rotary.
Rotary Club of Jersey president Bob Marshall said that each box, containing shelter for ten people as well as cooking and water purifying equipment, could be delivered to Indonesia for £490.
He said: ‘Many thousands are sleeping outside with virtually no possessions.
The immediate need is for shelter and clean water.’
