Town parking problems ‘are hitting traders’
Saturday 1st July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
DISORGANISED and insufficient car parking in St Helier is putting off shoppers and causing huge losses for retailers, say the Chamber of Commerce.
As figures show that sales of paycards fell by 26 per cent in 2005, traders have reported losses of over £1 million – and a reduction in profits by half.
The president of the Chamber of Commerce, Kevin Keen, says these figures are worrying and indicate a significant drop in activity in the town centre.
He says: ‘Clearly if people are not buying paycards and parking in town, the danger is that they make use of free parking elsewhere.
Retailers do not control parking, but they are in danger of losing a lot of money if people stay away.’
