‘Lessons of the past that were not learned’
Tuesday 4th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
THE father of a man who fell to his death through the roof of Normans believes his son would still be alive if lessons had been learned from a similar tragedy in 1977.
Thomas Gibb has not only discovered a man fell through the same roof 29 years ago, but heard at the inquest into his son’s death that a witness had recently seen children playing on it ‘several times’.
He believes the low wall between Pier Road and the roof is far too easy to climb over and is calling for a review of safety guidelines.
Mr Gibb’s son, who was also called Thomas but known to friends as Tam, died in the early hours of 7 March.
He and a friend, Andrew Hepple, went onto the roof as a prank after a night out drinking.
