Owner of Voisins taken to tribunal

Tuesday 4th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.

THE former store manager of Voisins department store has taken owner Gerald Voisin to an employment tribunal over his dismissal last year.

Tom Brown, who had worked for the company for seven years, ran the store after Mr Voisin was elected a Deputy for St Lawrence and served two terms in the States.

Mr Brown has accused the former president of Economic Development as being less ‘law-maker’ and more ‘law-breaker’.

The Employment Tribunal heard yesterday that as Mr Voisin prepared to leave the States last autumn, he informed store manager Mr Brown that he would no longer be required as he wanted to do the job himself to save the company money.

Over the following month or so, the tribunal heard, the pair negotiated and settled on a redundancy package, which involved Mr Brown being placed on ‘gardening leave’ for nine months.

But Mr Brown argued that he was unfairly dismissed because his position, in effect, still existed and therefore his role could not have been made redundant.

The tribunal’s decision will be published in the next few months.
