French trade ‘won’t bring major savings’
Wednesday 5th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
MORE trade with France would not provide major economic benefits, according to a new report by UK consultants Oxera.
The report states that with the dominance of UK shops and companies in Jersey, and the fact that 90% of the Island’s trade is with England, Jersey has to be careful about the impact increasing trade with France would have on existing links with the UK.
Economic Development Minister Philip Ozouf said that trade between Jersey and France should be encouraged, but he agrees with Oxera that there should not be any Jersey subsidy for a new ferry service from Cherbourg.
