Les Mielles aiming for sevens heaven

Thursday 6th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.

LES Mielles face L’Ancresse away on Sunday bidding to win for the first time the Channel Islands final of the Hampshire seven-a-side golf tournament.

And victory would be extra sweet, as an administrational error has led to Les Mielles missing out on home advantage.

Simon Allichin, Les Mielles’ playing captain said: ‘It’s been a nightmare three weeks trying to sort out the venue.

It is played alternatively in Jersey and Guernsey and this year it should have been Jersey’s turn to host.

Hampshire made a mistake with the venue because of a change of secretary, and even though the Jersey Golf Union got involved, we still have to go to Guernsey.

‘There has been a lot going on in the background, but we now have to put that behind us and hopefully go there and win.

Our players are in good form and I believe we have every chance.

The pressure will be on L’Ancresse as they are playing at home and they will have to give us shots in many of the matches.

‘The Royal Jersey have allowed us to use their practice greens because they are quicker than ours and they will be similar to those at L’Ancresse.

‘I know a lot of our players have not played the Guernsey course before, but I’m confident we can go there and get the result we need to progress further in the competition.’ Les Mielles’ only other CI final was in 1999, when they were defeated by Royal Guernsey.

Les Mielles are represented by Allchin, Karl Fitzpatrick, Shane Fitzsimons, Paul Horgan, Julio Moniz, Jason Quénault and Chris Rayner.

John Leonard is reserve.
