Tribunal accused of favouring workers
Friday 7th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
EMPLOYMENT tribunals are slanted heavily in favour of workers and are penalising legitimate businesses, according to a hotel manager told to pay out £1,785 to a sacked chambermaid last month.
Ryczard Chivers of the Hotel Revere has written to the Jersey Employment Tribunal protesting against their finding in favour of Isobel Sousa and has warned businesses that the decision was ‘profound and ill-conceived’.
He said the tribunal had effectively upheld the rights of workers to leave the Island for a few weeks without speaking to their bosses and come back and demand reinstatement – and that it was up to employers to get in contact with them to find out if they wanted to come back and whether they wanted their job held open.
