Stowaway scorpion in with Co-op’s bananas
Wednesday 12th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
A SCORPION was discovered in a box of bananas in the storeroom at the Co-op’s Grand Marché store yesterday afternoon after a long journey from Costa Rica.
Staff member André Rodrigues, who is from Brazil, got the surprise of his life when he ripped open the top of the box and caught sight of the arachnid, which was around three inches long.
Mr Rodrigues said today that at first he thought the scorpion was dead as it remained completely still, but after calling in manager David Palmer, the creature startled them by scuttling under the bananas.
Mr Palmer contacted the Animals Shelter and a staff member came and collected the scorpion by using a special handling device.
