Tears as youth club runs out of cash
Wednesday 12th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
YOUNGSTERS are more likely to be hanging around on the streets because a St Helier youth club hasn’t got the cash or staff to stay fully open, it has been claimed.
Grands Vaux Youth Club announced this week that its Wednesday night session for those aged eight to 11 is closing.
Youth project manager Trevor Pitman, who runs the club, said the difficult decision had been made because he simply did not have the necessary resources.
He explained that it was actually outside the Youth Service’s remit to look after children that age, but, as at other clubs, it had been decided to open for a night to provide a constructive environment for them to enjoy.
‘Someone should be taking responsibility for these young people in the Island,’ he said.
