Higgins in a hurry!
Thursday 13th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
CHANNEL Islands ladies golf champion Olivia Higgins smashed the ladies’ course record over Royal Jersey GC’s Grouville links yesterday – only 24 hours after equalling it!
The Royal Jersey junior, who has won a golfing scholarship in North Carolina, USA, improved the record by three shots with a score of 72, to win the club’s ladies’ strokeplay championship.
The in-form 18-year-old equalled Sue Lea’s 1989 par-71 course record of 75 in round one on Tuesday, then went on to smash it yesterday – despite having terrible starts to both rounds.
Higgins went out yesterday in a three-over-par 39 after dropping shots at the first, second and fourth holes.
But she returned in a two-under-par 33 after seven pars and birdies at the par-5 12th and par-3 156-yard 15th to win the Corbin Trophy by 18 strokes.
‘I did exactly the same on the first four holes yesterday as I did in the first round,’ she said.
‘I think that was on my mind when I went in round two, but having had it happen already I was slightly more relaxed and knew I could come back from it, even though no putts dropped for me, or went my way, on either day! ‘I think I won with just solid golf – I was very pleased with the score,’ she said.
