Jersey name European cricket squad – and have Driver as a coach
Thursday 13th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY Cricket Board selectors have named their 14-player squad for their début in the European Cricket Council Division II Championship in Scotland next month.
The squad is: Mathew Hague (captain), Bobby Minty (wicketkeeper), Chris Jones, Peter Gough, Ian Crocker, Tony Carlyon, Mark Saralis, Nigel Crocker, Pete Blackburn, Jonny Gough, Dave Morfee, Jamie Brewster, Tom Minty and Andy Dewhurst.
Jersey play matches against Norway, France and Israel with the top two sides in the group progressing to the semi-final stages where they will meet either Guernsey, Germany, Gibraltar or Greece.
First place will play second place in the opposite group in the semi-finals with the winners of the semis then meeting in the final.
The international matches will be played between 2 and 9 August.
JCB team manager Dave Gorman said: ‘The loss of former County player Ryan Driver because of his ineligibility is a big blow to the squad but he will still travel with us as a coach.
‘When Jersey first decided to go into ICC Ryan was not around so hopefully he will be around for the next competition in two years’ time.
‘We play Guernsey away this weekend in a full dress rehearsal for Glasgow and it has been agreed by both islands that all 14 players will be used at some stage during the game.
‘It is a dry run and everything we plan to do in Glasgow we will do in Guernsey.
‘The tournament is getting close and the players are continuing to work hard.
Everyone knows what is required and they are looking forward to the challenge.
‘We know little about the opposition apart from Guernsey.
Knowing little is dangerous and it could be the biggest threat to us.’ Old Victorian Andy Dewhurst has returned to Jersey this week having played in the Sussex Championship this summer while at University in Chichester.
Gorman added: ‘Andy is an important ingredient in the squad’s mix.
He is a talented all-rounder who bats well while also being a useful right-arm medium pace bowler.
‘He is youthful and enthusiastic and he has been playing at a good standard this summer.’ Sunday’s match against Guernsey will be 50 overs a side.
The official party for Glasgow is: Development officer Chris Minty in his role as director, Ryan Driver (coach), Lynne Davis (scorer), Mike Carpenter (umpire), Dave Gorman (team manager), Keith Dennis (tour manager/chairman of JCB) and Ward Jenner (deputy chairman of JCB).
GUERNSEY’S 14-player squad includes Lee Savident and Jeremy Frith – both who have been deemed ineligible by the ICC and who are awaiting the result of appeals.
The other squad members are: Andy Biggins, Ami Banerjee, Tim Duke, Stuart le Prevost, Gary Rich, Richard Veillard, Matt Oliver, Jamie Nussbaumer, Stuart Bisson, Kris Mohemdl, Steve Quéripel and Mark Jefferies.
