Sri Lankan volleyballers head for Jersey

Saturday 15th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.

FOUR volleyball players from a Sri Lankan village devastated by the tsunami will enjoy the trip of a lifetime next week when they arrive to take part in a beach tournament in Jersey.

All four lost everything they owned when the waves smashed into Seenigama in southern Sri Lanka on Boxing Day 2004.

Three of them have never left the country before.

They had initially been denied permission to come on this trip but that decision was overturned after the intervention of Jersey’s Immigration Department.

The trip has been organised by Jersey Side by Side as part of its aim to build lasting links between the Island.
