Jersey win ECC warm-up
Monday 17th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY skipper Matt Hague hopes yesterday’s comfortable win over Guernsey will springboard the Island to victory at the European Cricket Council Second Division Championship in Scotland.
Australian Hague’s side set an impressive target of 259 for eight from their 50 overs, before bowling out a weak Sarnian side for 146 in the 47th over.
Hague, batting at number three, hit 66 from 116 balls before being bowled out by Guernsey teenager Kris Moherndland.
Jamie Brewster, coming in at number eight, hit 32 from just 24 balls – including two meaty sixes and two fours – but was eventually caught out.
Hague, an accountant, said: ‘The win was comfortable and it’s always good to get one over on Guernsey.
Everyone contributed and now we can go to Scotland with confidence.
‘We’ll be going there to win.
I don’t know a lot about our competitors but I know we are a good team.
None of them are big cricketing nations and we’ll be looking to bring home the trophy.’ Hague laid the foundations for a big total with a second-wicket stand with Ian Crocker of 93 and the captain worked the ones and twos well to set the tone for the innings.
Brewster supplied the big blows with his quickfire 32 while Jonny Gough and Andy Dewhurst added a valuable unbeaten 80 for the ninth-wicket.
