SCHOOL children are being given the chance to use their imagination and win up to £250 with a competition aimed at promoting good architectural design.

The competition, which is being launched this week by the Association of Jersey Architects and the Jersey Evening Post in time for Architecture Week 2006, will challenge children of all ages to design and construct a bridge using old JEP newspapers and glue.

The junior vice-president of the Association of Jersey Architects, George de Sousa, said: ‘We really want kids to start thinking in a different way.

We want them to really use their imagination and, with limited materials, try to produce something different.

We are asking them to produce an A3 design statement and concept and it will be judged by members of the AJA panel, in terms of design, imagination and function.

As an Island, we are completely reliant on various forms of connections to keep us in contact with the rest of the world.’ AJA president Mike Waddington said he hoped the competition might raise children’s knowledge of good design and aim to raise their interests.
