FORMER Jersey College for Girls student Solomia Zoumaras has won this year’s Jersey Telecom Student Art Exhibition Award.
The 23-year-old ceramic artist’s collection of Bauhaus-inspired coffee cups placed her above the four other finalists – furniture designer Karina Traynor, costume designer Emma Reid, painter Nicole Smith and photographer Tulia Policarpo – and earned her the £800 first prize.
The competition, now in its tenth year, showcases the work of local students in full-time art education and all five finalists’ work will be on display in the Arts Centre’s Berni Gallery until Saturday 29 July.
To celebrate the tenth birthday, there is also a chance for the public to choose their own favourite artist via text vote.
Miss Zoumaras studied furniture and production design at Nottingham Trent University before moving to Bath Spa University, from where she has just graduated with a BA in ceramics and 3D design.
‘This is my degree show work,’ she said of her winning collection.
‘They pieces are inspired by the Bauhaus period, modernism and architecture.’
