Cricket:Morfee the Jersey Side by Side handicap winner

Wednesday 19th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.

CONGRATULATIONS to Dave Morfee who has won the inaugural Jersey Side by Side Cricket handicap, which has awarded points for runs, wickets, catches etc throughout the season.

The handicaps were calculated on each player’s estimated points for the season so that all had a theoretically equal chance of winning.

Morfee, who started in 56th out of the 71 strong field, with 450 points, accumulated 742 points from a string of high-scoring performances, hitting the front in the sixth week never to be headed after.

His final total of 1192 was a hundred ahead of second placed Jules Nolli and he will receive his trophy at the end of season dinner.

Those 20 or so players that have ended the season with more than 850 points have played to above their handicap and anyone who got 800 points or more can also give themselves a pat on the back and hope they get a bit of respite from the handicapper next year.

The others, whom for some reason or another haven’t performed to the handicappers expectations, will hopefully come back next year fit and ready to exploit what may be a favourable handicap mark.

Matty Hague accumulated the highest amount of points throughout the season with 817 points and Ryan Driver had the highest score in one game with 204.

Poor young Tom Minty gets the wooden spoon award as he has finished in last place.

To be fair he missed the first half of the season through injury and was always going to find it tough to improve on last year.

As there were only two games this week the competition for player of the week may not have been quite so competitive as usual.

Pete Gough’s 151 points, though, would have been good enough to have won it most weeks and he deserves this week’s title for scoring 81 runs, taking two wickets and two catches.

He heads the team of the week which also consists of Jack Waters, Sam Dewhurst, Jason Carpenter, Ollie Hughes, Simon Short, Trevor Rousseau, Simon Parker, Paul Baker, Andy Brown and Helius Pretorius.

Finally, a Team of the Year has been nominated, based on the amount of times a player has made the team of the week .

The Team is; Matty Hague (5), Nick Jewell (5), Dave Morfee (5), Jamie Brewster (4), Andy Brown (4), Dave Buxton (4), Bobby Minty (4), Jules Nolli (4).

There are a number of players who have made three appearances so those who have played above their handicap have been selected.

They are Paul Baker, Barry Parsons and Martin Waite.
