Cycle section spurs Pitcher to victory
Thursday 27th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
DESPITE trailing in thick fog after the swimming leg of the Pedal Power Triathlon Series event, at Le Braye on Sunday, Scott Pitcher’s impressive 30 km cycle leg set up his overall victory.
Daniel Halksworth was first out of the water, completing the 800m swim in less than 13 minutes, well ahead of Pitcher and UK athlete Richard Stead.
Pitcher quickly overtook Halksworth in recording a sub-40 minute bike leg, but Halksworth came back strongly in the final run to finish second, with Nick Le Cocq, another who excelled on the bike, finishing third.
Also producing notable performances were Dan Le Blancq and the winner of the recent novice event, Tom Perchard.
In the ladies’ Tracey Huish made a winning return after a three-year break, dominating from the start.
Regulars Helen Mackenzie and Laurance Assman were neck-and-neck behind Huish through the swim and bike, but Assman then pulled away in the run.
Sadly Mackenzie twisted an ankle which forced her to retire, allowing Fiona Daniels to come through and to take third place.
Running a race of her own was Judy Paul, in training for the European duathlon championship as part of the Great Britain team, and she put in some good times which will stand her in good stead at the event in September.
