Taxi shelter plan for the Airport
Saturday 29th July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
A TAXI shelter could be put up at the Airport to stop people having to wait in the rain.
An application has been made to Planning to put up a shelter outside the arrivals hall at a cost of £6,000.
It had been suggested that up to £175,000 should be spent on building a link between the building and the taxi rank to keep people dry.
However, Airport director Julian Green said that a new shelter was a far better, and cheaper, option.
He said: ‘It will be similar to the shelter that is there for the buses.
We recognise that we need to improve the facilities for people using taxis.
We looked at plans to remodel the structure of the terminal itself, but it was very expensive for very little gain.’ Although there is already a corridor intended for people to stand in to await a taxi, it tends to remain unused.
He said: ‘There is a propensity for people to stand outside anyway, so we felt that something similar to the bus shelter would be most appropriate, although it will be slightly larger.
‘There will still be a waiting area inside the Airport terminal in case there are large numbers of people waiting for taxis.
‘This is probably a fairly medium-term solution for us.
There is a large amount of redevelopment work to take place and we are looking for a much longer-term solution for the remodelling of the arrivals part of the building.
‘We shall be considering a new road system and ground transport interchange, and we shall be looking to see if we could incorporate a larger waiting area for taxi passengers.’
