Arsonist ignites furze fire

Monday 31st July 2006, 12:00AM BST.

A GORSE fire was started deliberately at La Moye on Friday night, burning 100 square metres of furze.

The fire was started on the cliffs at around 7 pm, and a man in his late forties was seen driving off at speed in a white BMW.

Police said this morning: ‘At about 7 pm, gorse was deliberately set alight near the desalination plant at La Moye, causing extensive damage across an area of approximately 100 square metres.’ The Fire Service were called to deal with the blaze, and station manager John Medder said that they thought it might have been a deliberate act as there was evidence left at the scene.

He said: ‘It is back-breaking work.

We had to have two fire engines there because it was so labour-intensive.

‘We were there until midnight and had to return in the morning because it had reignited.’
