Eight arrests in drink-drive campaign
Monday 31st July 2006, 12:00AM BST.
OVER 3,000 drivers were stopped by police in July as part of the summer drink-driving campaign – and just eight of those were arrested.
Around 200 people have been breathalysed since the campaign began on 10 July.
Police inspector Sara Garwood said the small number of those arrested showed that Islanders were heeding the message not to drink and drive.
She said: ‘For this campaign, we have stopped more people than we did over the same time last year.
However, we have breathalysed more.
We do feel that Islanders are taking notice of the message not to drink and drive.
Traditionally, July is the month of the year when drivers are more likely to drink and drive, possibly because of the hot weather and because people are out at events drinking.’ In total 3,039 drivers were stopped by States and honorary police, who have been speaking to drivers at various points across the Island at all times of day and night.
