New wine merchant opens

Tuesday 1st August 2006, 12:00AM BST.

A NEW wine merchant has arrived in Jersey.

Vine2glass has been set up by Filippo Rizzuto based at a warehouse in Grouville.

The company buys its wines direct from producers in Italy, France and Spain.

Mr Rizzuto (32) worked in the finance industry before fulfilling his wine-trade ambition.

‘My intention was always to go into a business dealing with the public,’ he says.

‘I come from a catering background – my dad’s Italian and he and my mum had a restaurant in Alderney which gave me experience of what people look for in a wine.

In the winter we used to go back to Italy where his family owns some small vineyards so I got some knowledge of how they work.

After setting up the business he spent two months researching suppliers.

‘I knew I needed products of a high quality but at the right price to be able to compete here – it’s quite a tight market in Jersey,’ he adds.

The wines Mr Rizzuto is promoting hardest are the two cheapest – a red and a white both at £3.

9 a bottle.

‘I can honestly say, hand on heart, that they are both extremely good for everyday drinking.
