‘First Proms’ – the show will go on

Thursday 31st August 2006, 12:00AM BST.

THE organisers of tomorrow evening’s charity event ‘Jersey’s First Proms’ have successfully made an 11th-hour bid to ensure that the show goes ahead despite major travel problems.

Family Nursing and Home Care have organised the Howard Davis Park concert, which will feature opera singer Russell Watson, international cellist Julian Lloyd Webber, the Milton Keynes City Orchestra and a firework finale, but problems arose following new flight baggage security rules.

The concert musicians had booked extra seats in the Flybe cabin for their instruments to prevent any damage to them but Flybe then informed organisers that the new rules meant the 28 stringed instruments would have to be placed in the hold.

The musicians said this was unacceptable as the low temperature in the hold could damage the instruments.

After two days of negotiation organisers secured the charter of two aircraft from the company Air Partners at Stansted – one for the performers and some instruments and another for the remaining instruments.
