New Year OBEs for two team leaders

Saturday 30th December 2006, 12:00AM GMT.

JERSEY resident Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam and JEC chief executive Mike Liston have both been made OBEs in the New Year’s Honours List.

Mr Woosnam (48) has been honoured for services to sport after leading the victorious European team to golfing glory at the K Club in Ireland in September amid unprecedented scenes of emotion.

Mr Liston (55) is honoured for services to the electrical industry and to charity.

He is not only chief executive of the JEC, he also chairs Jersey Post, the Appointments Commission and the London stock market listed company Renewable Energy Generation.

St Peter resident Mr Woosnam said he has had the ‘most fantastic year’.

The Ryder Cup win gave Europe three successive victories for the first time in history.

And the winning margin matched the record 181๒2 to 91๒2 score of 2005.

After taking a four-point lead into the final day having won all four previous sessions, Ian Woosnam’s team dominated the singles to deliver a crushing victory over the US.

And he has enjoyed himself since.

‘It was a lot of stress in the weeks running up to the Ryder Cup and pressure during the week itself.

But fantastic joy followed and it has been one honour after another ever since.

All my dreams have come true and long may it continue,’ he said.

He said he was getting the reward for what was very much a team effort and wanted to include family and friends among that team as well as the top European players who secured the trophy.

Mr Woosnam was lauded for having the courage to pick Darren Clarke only weeks after the death of his wife.

Mr Woosnam, who was already an MBE, has been married to wife Glen for 23 years and the couple have three children, Daniel (21), Rebecca (18) and Ami (15).

He turned professional in 1976 and gained the first of his 29 victories in the Swiss Open in 1982.

In 1991, he topped the world rankings having won his first major, the US Masters.

Mr Liston came to Jersey over 20 years ago to become chief engineer at the JEC.

He took over as chief executive in 1992.

He is married to Lesley and the couple live in Trinity ‘with a well fed cat’.

He found out four weeks ago in a letter from 10 Downing Street that he would be going to Buckingham Palace.

It would be fair to say that in the Island he is renowned for his boundless energy and ability to deal with a whole host of different matters.

‘I didn’t tell my PA Jeanette because I was too embarrassed as she actually runs the company.

I had to tell Lesley because I was frightened she would blame me if she did not have enough time to think about and choose an outfit to go the Palace,’ he joked.

Mr Liston added: ‘It is always the team captain that seems to get the medals.

I have got a great team.’ Asked about his charity work, he said it was not something he would talk about in any detail or say which charities he helps.

‘I try to give expertise and governance advice as well as help financially.

I have always disliked talking about it,’ he said.
