Wanderers defeat opens up Division II

THE race for the Division II title is hotting up after Jersey Wanderers suffered their first league defeat of the season on Saturday.
Up the road at St Brelade, Wanderers suffered a 1-0 defeat where Stephen Reed hit the only goal, a long-distance effort from a free kick which Wanderers junior ‘keeper Max Jouan got his hands too but couldn’t prevent the ball entering the goal.
Wanderers, who have two games in hand, now trail the Portuguese Club by five points after Portuguese returned from the FB Fields 4-2 winners against Beeches Old Boys.
Freddie Mendes notched another brace to take his haul to 19 goals this season.
Manny Fernandes and Joao Mendoca also registered for Portuguese and Joey Le Clech and Tony Liott for Beeches.
St Brelade’s success lifted them up one position to sixth.
Matt Scriven scored the only goal at St Clement earning the hosts a 1-0 victory against third-placed Jersey Nomads.
Sporting Academics remain fourth after they avenged an early season defeat beating St Martin/SCF 4-2 at Les Quennevais.
Jamie Roberts, Ben Gallichan Phil Helleur, Ben Ahier were on target for the winners and Paul Devenish and Mark Harris for the losers.
Michael Donoghue scored all the goals at St John where visitors St Lawrence won the bottom-of-the-table clash 3-0.
Sporting Academics remain in the second relegation place in Division I Reserves despite winning 2-1 at the Hockey Club against Jersey Wanderers.
Paul Banahan netted for Wanderers and Ged Horgan and Kevin Johnson for Accies.
The top two in Division II Reserves both won, leaders St Martin/SCF 7-2 at St Lawrence and second-placed St Ouen, who have two games in hand, 6-1 at Les Quennevais against the Portuguese Club.
Leon Cole scored four and Pascal Corcoran three for St Martin/SCF.
Callum Duffy scored on his début for St Ouen whose other goals came from Jon Evans, Ben Burton, Shane Carré, Scott Samson together with an own goal.
Valerio Figueira notched for Portuguese.
St Clement moved into joint third place after they returned 5-1 winners from St Saviour against St Paul’s, the latter who netted through junior Ollie Gallagher.
Gallagher was later sent off for allegedly attempting to trip up the referee.
Adam Claxton struck a hat-trick for St Clement with Jon Tuck and Paul Watson grabbing singles.
Paul O’Hara bagged a pair and Richard Moulson a single giving Jersey Nomads a 3-0 win against St John at the FB Fields.
Beeches Old Boys moved out of bottom place and on to seven points between bottom team St Lawrence and Portuguese following a 2-0 win against Magpies at the Airport.
On target were Ashton de Carteret and Mark Mauger.
Evergreen Tony Salaun bagged a hat-trick in Jersey Wanderers’ 6-0 Division C win at St Martin/SCF.
Scott Young, Trevor Makin and Kyle Riddell completed the scoring.
