Mixed reaction to wage proposals

THE proposed 16p increase in the minimum wage has received a mixed response.

The Employment Forum, which conducts an annual review of the minimum wage and makes a recommendation to the Social Security Minister as to whether it should change, announced on Friday that it thought the rate should increase to £5.

0 an hour from 1 April.

The seven-member panel is suggesting a 3.

per cent increase from the current £5.

4 hourly rate.

It is also recommending a 2.

per cent rise in the trainee rate, from £3.

4 to £4.

5, and a 3.

per cent increase in the amount allowed to be offset each week for accommodation and food.
