Victoria Prep in sevens heaven

VICTORIA College Preparatory won the Channel Islands County Stage of the ESFA’s under-11 7-a-side football Schools’ Cup yesterday.
At a blustery but sunny FB Fields, the College youngsters defeated Guernsey’s St Martin in the final 1-0 – Jack Baudains nodding home Jamie Simpson’s cross midway through the second half.
It was the right result as the College had created the better chances and played the better football, St Martin under achieving in the game having previously played well throughout.
In the first of two seven minutes each way periods, VCP’s Ollie Terry had a shot well blocked by goalkeeper Charlton Avery while Avery also did well to push over the crossbar Joe Kerschbaumer’s powerful shot.
College master Ben Silva said: ‘It’s been a great tournament with a lot of good football played and it’s always good to have the challenge of Guernsey teams.
‘Spirit and commitment was first class as normal, it’s pleasing to see all the team work that goes into the tournament and the smiling faces throughout.’ Gary Darling, secretary of Guernsey’s Primary Schools’ Association, said: ‘St Martin tucked away some good goals throughout but despite working hard in the final it proved to be one game too many.
‘The football, spirit and enthusiasm has again been very good and as I’m returning to take Guernsey’s Primary Schools’ side again year it was an excellent opportunity to have another look at our players together with some of the opposition!’ In their first knock-out section match, Ollie Terry and Jo Kerschbaumer scored the goals to defeat Guernsey’s Beechwood 2-0.
Victoria College Preparatory will now represent the CI in the South West area final later this year.
