Prison ‘turns the corner’

Saturday 13th January 2007, 12:00AM GMT.

LA MOYE Prison has ‘turned the corner’ after two damning inspection reports, according to its governor and the minister responsible.

They say that the construction of two new wings and an additional £500,000 funding per year has enabled them to turn around a prison that has been ‘underfunded since the day it was built’. Governor Steve Guy-Gibbens unveiled a ten-point Prison Improvement Plan yesterday that he said would turn around a prison described as ‘failing’. He expects a much better result from the next independent prison inspection. The ten-point programme covers: the first night and induction unit, public and child protection, race equality and diversity, security, resettlement and learning skills, healthcare services, incentives and earned privileges, corporate image, violence reduction and staff training and development.
