Slow down for students!
Saturday 13th January 2007, 12:00AM GMT.
STUDENTS at St Peter’s School are appealing for drivers to slow down.
Head teacher Steve Dewhurst says that many motorists are failing to obey the 20 mph speed limit on the road alongside the school and he is concerned for the safety of his pupils crossing the road. Along with the community police officer, Mr Dewhurst has been speaking to motorists and asking them to cut their speed. ‘Many said they didn’t realise it was a 20 mph zone. The 400-metre stretch is pretty dangerous first thing in the morning, and when the children are leaving school it is also a very dangerous time of the day.’ Mr Dewhurst said that if the primary school’s appeal to drivers falls on deaf ears, then in the weeks to come his students may protest to motorists outside the school with placards.
