Senator will request delay to States pay debate
Monday 15th January 2007, 12:00AM GMT.
TOMORROW’S debate on States pay could be delayed by Senator Ben Shenton who wants to use Standing Orders to force the Council of Ministers into making their position clear.
He says ministers are too embarrassed to admit that they want a pay rise, but says that if one is justified they should come out and say so. Senator Shenton will ask the States to delay tomorrow’s debate until the Council of Ministers has made its position clear. The Draft States of Jersey (Amendment No 3) Law 200-, which would rescind the part of the States of Jersey Law that guarantees equal pay for all States Members, is up for debate tomorrow in the first States sitting since the Christmas break. Privileges and Procedures want to amend the articles so that the States remuneration committee can consider whether Members with specific responsibility, such as ministers and scrutiny chairmen, should be paid more than those without official roles.
