Football:Sowney’s extra-effort lifts Trinity Shield
Wednesday 17th January 2007, 12:00AM GMT.
TEN-MAN St Saviour regained the Trinity Shield at Springfield last night following an extra-time winner from substitute Declan Sowney.
And the 16-year-old’s cool finish in a 3-2 victory against holders St Clement won him praise from St Saviour’s joint manager Ian Corfield.
‘Declan is only a young lad but he showed all the coolness of a veteran to score his goal,’ said Corfield.
‘He took a touch when the ball came into the area before sliding it past their ‘keeper; he really made it look easy when it wasn’t.
‘It was an even game throughout and both sides had opportunities to have won it in extra-time.
Casey Hickling kept us in it by pulling off one blinding save in a one-on-one situation, their striker was just a couple of yards away from him when he shot and Casey dived to catch the ball and it stuck to him like glue! ‘Both sides worked extremely hard throughout, there were not a lot of chances first half and in the end we were hanging on a bit after Mark Ray was sent off following two cautions.
‘There were no complaints, Mark and everybody knew, it was just one of those things.’ St Clement manager Dave Melton said: ‘It was a cracking game, it had everything and I really enjoyed it.
It’s a great shame someone had to lose, I thought we played the better football but St Saviour were more direct than us.
‘When we got back to 2-2 I thought we would go on and win it but it was not to be.
We made lots of changes chasing the game at the end and it so nearly paid off.
‘It was end-to-end stuff, a really noisy night from the supporters and great entertainment.’ Glen Durrans shot St Saviour ahead after he capitalised upon a mistake by ‘keeper Danny Evans.
Shortly after the resumption St Clement equalised through Mark Harris before a rash challenge resulted in a St Saviour penalty confidently converted by Jack Cannon.
Three minutes remained when substitute Paul Devenish levelled the scores following a mêlée in a goalmouth.
Sowney restored St Saviour’s lead for a third time and despite having a numerical advantage following Ray’s departure St Clement were unable to capitalise again.
Corfield praised central defender Carl Scott for another masterful performance while Melton credited veteran Jerry O’Shea and Stuart André for class performances.
