Football:Wanderers on triple title march
Wednesday 17th January 2007, 12:00AM GMT.
JERSEY Wanderers continue to head towards an unprecedented clean sweep of the top three Jersey Telecom Junior League Division I age group titles.
The red-and-whites currently top the under-18, under-16 and under-14 sections with the finishing lines in sight in all sections.
Wanderers under-16s came from a goal down on Sunday to win 6-1 at home against St Brelade, the Saints’ recent excellent run ended following goals by Barry Keith (two), Ciaran Cooper (two), Michael Weir and Chris Mourant after James Murray had opened the scoring.
John Hannah, Wanderers’ manager, said: ‘I’ve nothing but credit for my squad, they were very focused for the game and with both our recognised goalkeeper’s away playing rugby for the Island midfielder Sam de la Haye went in goal.
‘It was Sam’s choice and our plan was to protect him and play on the break.
I do a lot of work with Gary Bowman on passing and movement for the players at training and it was really pleasing to see many of the training ground routines being successful in the game.
‘We went a goal down early but we pulled it back shortly after.
Our offensive play was brilliant, we have a lot of midfielders and strikers who can score goals and on the day we created a lot and took our chances.
‘We have five players returning to the squad this week and we look forward to playing St Brelade again on Sunday in the semi-finals of the Eric Amy Cup.’ St Paul’s moved into joint second place, four points behind the leaders, with St Brelade after they defeated St Peter 8-1 at the IJ Bathe Field.
Daniel Tardivel hit a hat-trick, Anthony Fitzmaurice bagged a brace and Gregg Bremner, Jack Stirling and Dominic Pougeolle singles with Scott Welsh notching the Westerners’ consolation.
First Tower returned 3-1 victors from Trinity where John-Henry Kerr scored twice and Fabio Dos Santos once for the visitors.
Logan McGhee replied.
Rozel Rovers, from a game played more, moved seven points clear at the top of Division II after Nick Bolton scored a brace and Charlie Skrzypczak single in the Rovers’ 3-1 win against St Clement at Le Couvent.
Jake Hudson scored for visitors.
St John, Jersey Wanderers and St Paul’s won through to the U14 Brian Beckett Trophy semi-finals later this month after victories against St Ouen, Rozel Rovers and St Peter respectively.
Mark Goddard (two), Hugo Powell and Michael Freitas were on target for St John in their 4-0 win at St Ouen.
Ryan Connan hit the only goal at Le Couvent giving Division I leaders victory against Division II table-toppers Rozel Rovers.
St Paul’s were 5-2 winners against St Peter at St Saviour where Daniel Tostevin (two), Jake Baker, Harrison Jukes and Jamie Bowkett registered for the hosts and Clayton Romeril (two) for the visitors.
The semis, both 2.30 kick-offs at the FB Fields on Sunday 28 January, are: St John v Jersey Wanderers and St Paul’s v St Brelade.
