Thursday 18th January 2007, 12:00AM GMT.
A JERSEY Evening Post reporter has appeared in court after he was arrested while covering football celebrations during last year’s World Cup.
In the Magistrate’s Court yesterday Jonny Pearce (25) denied obstructing P sgt Andrew Bisson on 25 June in Minden Place after a match between Portugal and Holland. The JEP man was arrested while he was interviewing Portuguese football fans who had gathered around Minden Place car park to celebrate their victory over the Dutch which secured the nation a place in the quarter-finals of the competition. During the short hearing, the newspaper’s lawyer, Advocate Nuno Santos-Costa, told Assistant Magistrate Ian Christmas that he feared the journalist’s human rights had been breached because it had taken so long for the prosecution to charge him and bring the matter to court.
