Weather warnings as gales hit the Island
Thursday 18th January 2007, 12:00AM GMT.
GALE-force winds of over 50 mph buffeted the Island this morning.
The Met Office issued a severe gale warning last night and the Fire Service asked Islanders to watch out for flying debris. Boat owners were also advised by the Harbour to check their moorings. The strong southerly winds have affected shipping today but Condor has rejigged its schedule to minimise delays. Duty forecaster Jennie Holley said the Met Office expected gales of up to Force 9 in the Channel Islands area but winds were unlikely to be as strong in Jersey, where Force 8 was likely to be the maximum.
