Firemen support union over pay in public sector

FIREFIGHTERS say they will fully support any action the Transport and General Workers Union takes in the dispute over public-sector pay.

The Jersey Fire and Rescue Service Association executive say that the decision by the employer to pay all staff a 2.4% award in February pay packets backdated to 1 June last year as an ‘advanced goodwill gesture’ threatens to divide the membership in its opinions and loyalties. The award, announced earlier this week by Chief Minister Frank Walker, is the first time in the history of public-sector wage negotiations that a payment has been made ahead of the conclusion of formal negotiations.
