Living the high life

A 101-YEAR-OLD great grandmother who lives on her own on the 14th floor of a Housing tower block has just celebrated her birthday.

Marjorie Bertram has lived through the sinking of the Titanic, two world wars, England winning the World Cup and the first man walking on the moon – and all before her 65th birthday. Nearly 40 years on she is fighting fit and has refused to leave her one-bedroom flat to live with her daughter or move to a nursing home. Mrs Bertram goes out once a day to collect her mail, which is delivered to a letter box on the ground floor of her block at La Collette Flats – although she uses the lift and not the stairs these days. She is also a regular at La Fontaine pub.
