Phone masts: Scrutiny hear of health fears
Friday 19th January 2007, 12:00AM GMT.
MOBILE phone masts should not continue to be put up in Jersey while the health risks are still unknown, a Scrutiny sub-panel has been told.
At the first of two public meetings – attended by just 18 members of the public at Hautlieu School last night – members of the audience accused the States of gambling with the health of the Island by ‘saturating’ Jersey with mobile base stations. Fears were also raised about the proximity of masts to homes and schools and the possible effects on property prices for those who live close to masts. The small but lively crowd also gave the panel first-hand accounts of Islanders who had masts closer than 50 metres to the windows of their homes.
