Reform leaflets to hit all Island doormats

Friday 19th January 2007, 12:00AM GMT.

EVERY household is to receive a leaflet on the five models for reforming the States in an unprecedented consultation exercise that will also see a series of public meetings and a referendum.

A general election, the removal of the Constables, a ‘super-constituency’ plan and the abolition of the Islandwide mandate are all options as the States move to complete the reforms set in train by the Clothier Report in 2000. Privileges and Procedures, who have responsibility for States reform, hope the reforms will increase Jersey’s woeful election turnout, reduce the number of States Members and concentrate States Members minds on giving the public what they want. They are sending out the leaflets at the end of this month. The meetings will take place at 7.30 pm: Tuesday 30 January at St Paul’s Centre. Wednesday 31 January at St Mary’s Parish Hall. Thursday 1 February at St Martin’s Public Hall.
