Ship loaded with chemicals towed out of CI waters
Saturday 20th January 2007, 12:00AM GMT.
A HOLED container ship laden with tonnes of toxic material was towed out of Channel Island waters last night.
At one point the 276-metre MSC Napoli was just 30 miles west of Guernsey, and being pushed east by the wind. Cracks in the hull of the container ship had provoked fears that its cargo of explosives, liquid gas, liquid inflammables, corrosive products and fuel could be spilled into the sea just miles away from the island. But tugs attached tow ropes to the vessel yesterday afternoon and pulled it safely out of Channel Island waters. The vessel has now reached Lyme Bay in Devon.
