Minimum wage up 16p an hour

A NEW minimum wage of £5.40 an hour has been approved by the Social Security Minister.

Senator Paul Routier has backed the recommendation of the Employment Forum that the minimum rate should rise from its current £5.24. The increase will take effect from 1 April. The rate for trainees will increase by 11p to £4.05 and a new minimum wage for young people with weekend and evening jobs will also be £4.05. The maximum amount allowed to be offset for accommodation and housing with food provided will increase to £59.10 and £78.80 respectively.
