Transatlantic sailor is welcomed home
Thursday 25th January 2007, 12:00AM GMT.
JERSEY transatlantic sailing star Phil Sharp was welcomed home last night by sponsors Jersey Harbours at a celebratory function at St Helier Yacht Club.
Surrounded by family, friends and well wishers, including the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, Mr Sharp was presented with a club burgee (a flag) by St Helier Yacht Club commodore Richard Ireson and made an honorary life member for his achievements. A picture of Mr Sharp celebrating his finish in Guadeloupe was also presented to the former Victoria College pupil by chief executive of Jersey Harbours, Captain Howard Le Cornu. A candidate for tonight’s Cable and Wireless Channel Island Sports Personality of the Year award, 25-year-old Mr Sharp recently attempted to bring his winning boat back to Jersey but had to leave the craft in Spain due to bad weather.
