Water polo tournament could be annual event

Thursday 25th January 2007, 12:00AM GMT.

JERSEY host a South East League West Division water polo tournament at Les Quennevais next month.

And should the weekend tournament be a success, Jersey Water Polo Association president and player Nick Dotter would like to see it become an annual event.

Jersey face matches against the City of Southampton, Basingstoke, Oxford and Cranleigh on the weekend of 10 and 11 February and they are looking forward to the challenge.

Dotter said: ‘Everyone is looking forward to the weekend, four teams are coming and over 80 people in total so that’s a good boost Tourism-wise at this time of the year.

‘We’re keen to be good hosts, long term it would be fantastic for our sport if we could make this an annual event.

We are playing the same teams away in another tournament in March so there is enough interest among the clubs.

‘The competition will be tough for us though because we’ve not played as a squad before.

‘It was a great shame to pull out of the National League because of the high costs but league officials did not help us either when we had logistical problems, they were more interested in fining us if we were late and deducting points! ‘I’m confident we can give a good account of ourselves and anyone wishing to support us will be more than welcome at Les Quennevais any time over the weekend.’ Jersey play Basingstoke (2 pm) and Cranleigh (4.30 pm) on the Saturday and Oxford (12.30 pm) and City of Southampton (3 pm) on the Sunday.

Education, Sport and Culture and Collins Stewart Stockbrokers are supporting the tournament.

Jersey’s squad, who have been training weekly since the JWPA League finished in November, is: Rick Godson, John Woodward, Steve Price, Matt Gregory, Steff McGreevy, Richard Lain, Tom Cope, Martin Sinagl, Thomas Toth, Nick Dotter, Nat Snook, Dan De Oliveira, Dom Sanchez, Doc Snook and Luke Hosty.
