Those udder carrots just didn’t work…

A FARMER whose Jersey cows began producing pink milk because they would eat nothing but crunchy orange carrots has solved the problem – by growing white ones.

Peter Houguez, who owns a farm in St Ouen, searched until his cows came home for a solution to his unusual dilemma, and after hearing rumours of an elusive seed that produced white carrots, he trawled the country looking for it. For a time he bought the seed from England, but his source there dried up, and when nothing else turned up in the UK he headed for the continent, eventually finding the seed in France. He has been feeding his cattle the white carrots ever since. Mr Houguez’s crop remained a St Ouen secret for more than 20 years until Remi Couriard paid him a visit and suggested he market it. He now has the backing of the Genuine Jersey Products Association, an organisation which promotes farmers and their goods, and his white carrots are proving popular among Islanders.
