Badminton:Cann reaches Swedish Open semis

Monday 29th January 2007, 12:00AM GMT.

JERSEY’S Elizabeth Cann reached the semi-final of the Swedish Open over the weekend, going down to the eventual winner yesterday.

After beating Sweden’s Emelie Lennartsson 2-1, Holland’s Lisa Malaiholl 2-0 and Denmark’s Nanna Brosolat Jenson 2-0, Jersey’s Commonwealth Games player – a former winner of the event – went out to China’s Li Wenyan.

Despite being the only former winner in the ladies singles competition, Cann is unseeded for the national badminton championships which start on Friday in Manchester.

Jill Pittard, beaten finalist last year, is top seed, with Elite Final winner Michelle Cheung (Bucks) second seed and Rachel Howard (Herts), who was runner-up to her in Bath, at No 3.

Rebecca Pantaney (Gloucs), who was runner-up in 1998, has come out of retirement to enter and is No 4 seed.

Former Commonwealth champion Tracey Hallam is out injured and Julia Mann has now retired.
