Football:Relegation fears grow for Tower
Monday 29th January 2007, 12:00AM GMT.
FIRST Tower United and Trinity are deeper in relegation trouble after further defeats on Saturday afternoon.
Tower stumbled to a 4-0 reverse at improving champions St Peter while Trinity were beaten 1-0 by Rozel Rovers at Le Couvent, the Rovers win now giving them a little breathing space ahead of the bottom four.
Peter Vincenti capitalised with a brace for St Peter, the first after a goalkeeping error, while Bradley Russell and substitute Marco Vieira added further scores in the second half.
St Peter, who remain fourth after chalking up their fourth league win in consecutive games, had former professional Jack Cannon sent off midway through the second half following a comment made to an opponent.
Jon Trigg and Martin King’s side have won their last four league matches, scoring 18 goals without conceding.
Trigg said: ‘We’ve done really well recently, I think we’ve turned the corner.
Three of the games being at home has helped us too, but I knew it would take time with the changes we’ve made this season.
‘However, we are still nowhere near where I want us to be – we are still developing.’ Tower manager Dave Philpott said: ‘We played three in the middle and three up front, our plan was to push them back and not let their wingbacks get forward.
‘Sadly we did not do that and making a mistake we were punished and we were chasing the game after that.
‘We played well against St Paul’s recently but we can’t seem to do it two games running.
The players now need to stand up and be counted.
I’m looking for a big improvement in our next game against St Ouen and to push forward we have to turn in good performances week in week out.’ Carl Scott scored the only goal at Le Couvent leaving Trinity three off the bottom after a fourth league defeat in five games.
Trinity, who had substitute Stephen Jones sent off, have also failed to score in their last three matches.
The call for a possible play-off between the eighth-placed team in Division I and the Division II runners-up at the end of each season was no doubt heightened again at the weekend.
Struggling Magpies, who finished second in Division II last season, were hammered 16-0 by Grouville at Le Boulivot making it 30 goals conceded in their last two games.
Liam Walshe lead Grouville’s goal-rush netting eight, Alex Jefferies chipped in with a hat-trick and Russell Le Feuvre, Toni Cardoso, John Kiersey, Nelio Maroté and Paul Crompton singles.
Rozel Rovers and St Paul’s meet in a JFA Wheway Cup semi-final at Springfield tomorrow night.
Kick-off is at 7.30.
