Filling a gap in the market

A NEW fulfilment company dealing in dental and medical supplies has set up in Jersey.
Dentist Paul Davies and Paul Deveney, a physiotherapist, have launched Medi-sent after a chat aboard a ski lift in the Austrian Alps when they discussed how they could apply themselves differently in their respective jobs.
The company was formed to take advantage of the Channel Islands VAT regulations and sell things like a toothbrush sanitiser into the UK via a website – although 80 per cent of their products now sell for more than the £18 VAT threshold figure.
Medi-sent is also selling consumables such as dental burs and acupuncture needles, which fall under the £18 VAT threshold, to dentists and physios and is currently in negotiations with the General Hospital to supply them with acupuncture needles and Tens machines – portable pain relief apparatus.
It is also hoped to supply direct to the public.
At the moment the company has around ten products with plans for more as the business builds.
The pair have also launched a pilot physiotherapy scheme, offering treatment at a discounted £21 a session – the cost is normally £38 to £45 – at a surgery in Les Quennevais precinct.
Said Mr Deveney: ‘If it’s a success we might be able to drop the price a bit more and there will be a chance to extend it to the UK – there are a lot of physios looking for work there.
