Small charities ‘don’t waste money’

A CHARITY worker in Sri Lanka has rejected claims that small Island charities are squandering money in the country.

Islander Francis Binney, who has worked in the country for over a year, says that Jersey Overseas Aid should be dealing with the people on the ground rather than handing their money over to large international organisations. Mr Binney says that Overseas Aid Commission chairman Deputy Jacqui Huet – who accused small charities like Jersey Side by Side of misusing post-tsunami funds during a Scrutiny sub-panel hearing last month – should think more carefully about her comments. He argues that while some large international organisations have ‘wasted money in appalling ways’, many smaller, local non-governmental organisations are very efficient at distributing aid.
