Smokers urged to use pouches

PARISH funds are to be used to sponsor a scheme to stop smokers littering the streets with cigarette butts.

Pouches which can hold extinguished cigarette ends will be offered to smokers in pubs and shops at a cost of a charity donation of 20p. The parish of St Helier is to pay £1,000 towards the cost of 5,000 pouches, with the companies British American Tobacco and Ann Street Brewery also helping fund the venture. The Constable, Simon Crowcroft, said he believed the £1,000 from parish funds was money well spent if it led to the reduction in street litter which has increased enormously since the introduction of the workplace smoking ban in January. ‘We want to encourage more responsible habits among smokers and by making the pouches readily available we hope we will be offering them an easy and clean way to dispose of their litter,’ he said.
