Volleyball ladies await decision on Priory postponement

THE Jersey ladies volleyball squad are waiting to see if they have sealed second place in their debut season in the UK’s South West Ladies League.

The team were due to play their remaining two fixtures last weekend but Priory, who they are battling for second position with, pulled out of the match just as Jersey were preparing to fly to the UK.

Now it is unclear whether the late decision can be accepted as a postponement or whether Priory default the match, awarding Jersey the crucial points – and second spot.

Coach Peter Cadiou said: ‘We await the organisers’ decision, and either way we are in a strong position, but it was a real pity that Priory didn’t turn up.

‘If we win by default because of their no-show then it will not be justice for all the fantastic hard work and dedication that all the players have put in over the season.

‘If the organisers decide that we have to play Priory then we will travel to the UK again, and whoever wins will take second place.

‘While it would be nice to win through a victory, it has been a long season and a full squad has not been able to travel because we have not had any sponsorship which has been a strain.

‘I am sure that next year, if we obtain sponsorship and are able to take a full squad to each game, we will finish first, not second.’ Jersey played Mavericks last weekend and showed true grit as they fought back from two sets down to win.

Cadiou said: ”Captain Nikki Appleton and assistant Ellen Carol worked well together to adapt our playing strategy and counter Mavericks’ strong start.

They kept the team focused on the objective of winning the game and progressively lead them to that objective.

‘It was a very solid team performance which demonstrates to the UK sides that the Jersey squad is a force to be reckoned with, and can no longer be taken lightly.

‘This is a credit to the players’ months of dedicated and disciplined training and commitment together with the tireless support work from Deirdre de Rue and David Sutton.
